The Sungrebe is the only member of the genus Heliornis. The Sungrebe is not related to the Least Grebe, Pied-billed Grebe, or any other grebe. It lives in swamps and marshes using webbed lobes on their feet similar to grebes and coots. The sexes differ in the color of the cheeks, buff in the female and white for the male. The Sungrebe feeds on a variety of aquatic life like fish and water plants. Sungrebes seldom dive like most Grebes to escape danger or seeking food. Most of the time they will flee danger by flying low on the water. It can appear they are running on the water with their feet movement. It can be found in slow-flowing streams and secluded waterways with overhanging vegetation along the banks from Mexico’s El Cielo area south to Argentina and southern Brazil.

These photos may well be the most northern Sungrebe image in the wild.
