Tropical Texas Times

August 2007
Rain is great for the grass, plants and park

We had almost 4 inches the week of July 16th. It came slow with very little run off. The park looks great from the rain. Lots of tree trimming has made us look even better. Jennie has stayed on the phone getting the power company to do the dangerous parts. The mower deck has been a challenge keeping up. We are waiting for parts again. Luckily, David had the place all mowed before it broke. Time now for trimming and edging when not raining. Roy will have no bare grass spots to deal with when mowing the driving range.

Freeway Construction is mostly done.
The entrances and exits including Boca Chica Blvd are completed and in need of only a few finishing touches. This does not bother traffic flow. The relocation of the entrances and exit have made missing the lights on the access road great. San Benito still has some construction, but it is also showing signs of completion. The traffic is flowing great in Harlingen with Weslaco getting back to normal also. Texas 48 to Port Isabel and South Padre Island is also close to finish. Two bridges have one side completed with traffic going and the other sides are about half completed. Completion of construction on Tx 48 will also mean an increase in speed limit.

Lady's Luncheons will enjoy a few new and different eateries this coming winter. A new Italian restaurant is really impressive with the choice of food, drink, and atmosphere while keeping the price reasonable. Another is a country restaurant with great home cooked type meals of tilapia, meat loaf, beef tips, and more along with mashed or twice baked potatoes, salad, and dessert plus tea, wine, or water. Our favorite eateries will be visited again too.

Pool and Spa

The pool and spa were completely refinished in April. Some small imperfections are evident and may need a look in the Fall. The spa heater is being worked on by a local pool company now. The local company and manufacture are having words on how to fix it now.

Make Your Reservations for this winter!!

Details on reservations can be seen on a posted rate sheet by clicking on the Reservation Choice Form. Lots can be seen at Lot Pictures. Many are taken, but some are still open. The sooner you make a choice the more you will have to choose from. More links at page bottom!

Park staff summer breaks.

Jennie and I try to get some of our weekends back from our normal seven day a week schedule. Jennie and I have travel and activities that can help a traveler more enjoy the area. Dave is having to stay around this summer, but may have time in the fall. See About Us
Jennie has attended three archeology (history) events with two meetings and one field trip. She just return early from a field trip near Corpus Christi looking like a drowned Shih Tzu. Wading into the dig's location and then in water and mud discovering arrow heads, pottery pieces, and charcoal. She has some more stories I am not sure about. She also finally found the oyster beds up the Rio Grande River I knew about near Roma. Jennie is leading an Archeology Fair Saturday Oct. 13, 2007.
I had three birding (Natural History) trips from March through July to the El Cielo Biosphere - North America's northern most cloud forest plus a few sun rises and sun sets here. You can see photos and descriptions of all but the July trip (not up yet) by clicking on March and May. The only Photo on the web of the Altamira Yellowthroat can be seen by click March. Local trips and birds can be seen on the Rio Grande Delta Audubon Web Site newsletters of June and July.
We are already looking forward to the Halloween Party, Fall German Dinner, and the beginng of our winter activities.
