Gasoline - Diesel - Propane
USA
Fuel is an important part of our lives. It is used to heat our houses, run our vehicles, and make our electricity. Our warm climate during the winter seriously reduces fuel consumption along with the normally low price. AAA has our area with the second lowest gas price in Texas.

Matamoros, Mexico - Prices on May 21, 2008
Fuel at Mexico prices influences buyers in Brownsville like yourself. The unusually low price of Mexico fuel has kept prices right at the USA border lower than even a few miles away. Prices in Matamoros to the right is adjusted for liter to gallon and peso to dollar. Today, Sept. 2, 2005 Jennie and I visited Matamoros for gasoline, medication, rum, some soft drinks, and a taste of Mexican food. Add another 10% tax that is charged leaving still an unbelievable low price compare to the USA prices. The fuel price for Regular (Magna) was 7.51 pesos and diesel at 5.79. A gallon is 3.78 liters and the peso's current value is 10.9 to the dollar. Ie. 7.51 X 3.78 = 28.3878 / 10.9 = $2.604 US per gallon of gas. Diesel price of 5.79 X 3.78= 21.8862 / 10.9 = $2.008

Purchase Mexico insurance before crossing at about $30.00. The more you purchase the more you save. Ie. 40 gallons of diesel = savings of $103.60 plus meds etc.

Cost per Gallon in Mexico
Regular - 87 Octane $2.60
Premimum - 92 Octane
Diesel $2.00
I travel thousands of miles yearly in Mexico with no fuel problems in either a V6 94 Explorer or a 1999 Suburban V8. An Octane booster is available for use with the 87 Octane Gas. Two fall 05 trips totaling over 1,200 miles in a diesel Jeep in Mexico did great with 29MPG on open road at 100KPH.

Price is posted on each pump with product, octane, and certification of accurate measurement is on Mexico pumps. You can just barely make out the price which I have put above. These photos, prices, and currency exchange rates are on September 2, 2005.

Other cost for us was $4.05 in bridge fees plus Mexico insurance you can buy by the day or more. The more transaction on your trip to Mexico the more you save.

The Dental Prices are from Mexico during May 2006.

The prices are from a newspaper ad June 2006. Both Name Brand and generic medication can be purchased which can add more to savings. Medication many times can be purchased in Mexico without a Doctor's Prescription which also reduces the cost. However you need to be wary of using any medicine without a Doctor's approval.

Normally, one month's supply of a medication can be brought to the USA legally. Mexican law may require a doctor’s prescription for you to have a medication in your possession in Mexico. Controlled Substances and habit-forming drugs are subject to US laws and for the most part cannot be brought back to the USA. You can check with US Customs on any question when crossing to Mexico. A good rule when returning to the USA is to ALWAYS DECLARE EVERYTHING then the worse that can happen is returning the medication or loosing it. Declaring can save you a lot of trouble whether it be medication, fruit, endangered species product or others. Taking medication not prescribed by a doctor can seriously affect your health.

This list of general prices from different Mexican towns will give you an idea of more bargains. Blankets for your bed, couch, and even car are a popular item. Vanilla for you kitchen or a friend or Heartgard for your pet are also bargains. Liquor prices are priced well even after the tax crossing the border currently at $1.10. Our day trips are set up to make the trip and shopping a very enjoyable day. Some of these items have limited quantities and taxes. Declare all you are bringing to the USA always. This price list is based on a shopping list of June 27, 2002 except Canadian items, which was Nov. 2001.
